Assignment for Friday April 8, 2010. for Zosha
In 1968 all Americans were supposed to have equal rights, what happened? In 1991 all disabled individuals were supposed to have equal rights. What happened? I happen to be one of many students that is across this country that is a student with a disability on a college campus. No, I don’t live on campus, but I do commute to campus from home. I have been a student here at Syracuse University for about three and a half years. I have had my share of problems with having doors, buildings, and other things that are supposed to be accessible for me and other students not in working order or not being able to use. For an example, there is a ramp that is in the front of the HBC building on the campus. The problem is that the ramp is not wide enough for a wheelchair. Also, some of the other students park their bikes there on the ramp. So if the bikes are on the ramp how is a disabled student supposed to use the ramp? I’m going to give you another example there is a mental health building that was supposed to be updated for disabled students. One day this one student who happens to be disabled went to use the facilities and end up getting stuck in the bathroom because she was not able to open the bathroom door because it was to heavy for her. The other students had to go looking for her because they didn’t know what had happened to her.
